Dubai World Cup and Doncaster & Kempton

Dubai has it's big night with a card consisting of 5 G1's including the $10 million World Cup and 3 G2's as well. This is the carnival that Sydney's Championships has to compete with to attract world class horses.Up against the wealth of the oil rich Emiratis there can be in the forseeable future only be one winner.
Doncaster kicks off the UK flat season with some very competitive races including the Lincoln.Early season racing on soft ground is an unattractive betting medium.Off Art catches the eye as a likely type for the Lincoln and Dream Walker does the same in the Spring Mile. Both are well found in betting however. The Cammidge trophy is a tight contest but a very intriguing one.
Kempton has a good card on the all weather-the class2 6 furlong handicap has some promising types and is a really good tight handicap.
Tweets throughout the night but just one bet early in the first at Meydan

Advised Bet

Meydan Race 1  Have to be with Soft Falling Rain here and trusting his excellent trainer will have him spot on for this race 1.25 units at 4.2 or better.4.50 with some books and 4.40 with Betfair

Guineas,George Ryder & Galaxy at Rosehill and Moonee Valley

Three G1's at Rosehill which posts a Heavy 9 and there are some showers forecast.
Moonee Valley is a Dead 4 and it's dry there so expect it upgrades.

Tough day at Rosehill with a Heavy 9.I expect you are better off up front than out the back but we'll see what pattern develops.
I can't get a confident handle on the Rosehill Guineas so no bets there. The only horse I could back in the Galaxy is Rain Affair.I'm sure he'll lead and over this 1100m will be hard to peg back.Wet track and 1100m are perfect for him but you do have to be forgiving to risk having your money down. Not committed yet.
I am backing Gordon Lord Byron in the George Ryder. He has very high class European form around this trip and he should be in single figures here.He loves it wet and can race handy. No one let me on at 21.0 so I've had to take 19.0 which is massive overs

Advised Bet; Rosehill Race 7 Gordon Lord Byron 0.55 units at the 19.0 on offer now

The rest of the card is very tough to unravel with any confidence apart from the first which looks a match between Opinion and The Offer. There hard to split if the run to their best.Their European ratings are almost identical. Both go very well in the wet.

At the Valley there are bet possibilities in races 5,6 and 8 but I am not on anything yet and will advise via twitter throughout the afternoon.

Out of form so far this week with the "lays"so I'm a bit behind and looking to strike back hard today.

Big night tonight and I'll post another blog later covering Dubai's World Cup night and the start of the UK flat season (turf) at Doncaster

Mornington & Kensington Today

Mornington is a Good 3 and it's dry at the moment. There are late showers forecast but they may not arrive until the end of the day/early evening so provided they stay away expect fast conditions.
The Kenso track is a Dead 5 and there is currently rain around Randwick so where that one ends up is uncertain-keep monitoring.
There are definite possibilities today on both sides of the book. The early market inbalances are corrected within a very short time frame now with very little money actually being layed so getting on early is proving more and more difficult. It's hard to $100 on at anything over 5.0 so there really is little point in showing your hand early.
Anything I'm doing and any updates will be sent via Twitter throughout the afternoon.

With the future of Betfair in Australia uncertain and the UK corparates operating here with the same business model as they use to shaft everybody over there it looks like a strong national tote with rebates will be the only hope to keep the markets strong and give anyone a hope of getting an earn out of the punt.

By the way Betfair froze withdrawals over the weekend citing problems with their banks This is probably a glitch but having been skinned before (not by them of course they are usually excellent payers -quick and accurate) I've taken the precaution of bringing my account down to the barest minimum I can operate with. When I've withdrawn before the funds are always there the following day if I request them before 10am.If I don't have the funds tomorrow as per usual I'll be letting everyone know and asking some serious questions.Doubt there is a real problem but confidence in Betfair management has eroded slowly over the last 3/4 years and it's one shambles after another so nothing would totally surprise.Unfortunately you get very wordly wise as you older.

Dubai has it's World Cup on Saturday evening/Sunday morning and it looks a better proposition this year than it has the last couple of years.
Doncaster kicks off the UK flat season on Saturday and the main races there are good. The usual Easter fixture at Kempton  these days on the all weather has been brought forward to Saturday this year probably because Easter is so late this year.Saturday is going to be a busy day but I'll probably concentrate on the Dubai racing as there looks to be real opportunities there.

Last Weeks Round Up

A few more bets volume wise last week but once again all sent later via twitter.A good double priced winner on Wednesday but all the ones after that got rolled so a modest losing week for the blog.
Here are the figures:-

All bets sent via Twitter

Stakes     8.25 units
Returns   6.75 units
Loss        1.50 units

I personally did a bit better although it was a roller coaster week on the "lays".Some of the ones I took on were big drifters so I cashed out with solid profits but a couple of them won so without the big drifts I would have had the full losses.Anyway I finished  a bit ahead on the week but realistically was probably fortunate to return black figures last week.
Back tomorrow

Coolmore Classic & Ranvet At Rosehill & Sandown

Rosehill is a Dead 4 upgraded from an earlier 5.There is a possibility of thunderstorms during the afternoon so careful monitoring is required.Sandown is a Good 3 and the forecast morning rain hasn't eventuated so expect fast conditions.
First question when dealing with Sydney tracks this year has been-will it play fair?More often than not the answer has been that there has been some bias. With juice in the ground and the possibility of more you need a compelling reason to commit early I think.
Last meeting at Sandown Lakeside when the rail was true strongly favoured on pacers. The rail goes out 5m today and again with the obvious possibility of some sort of bias do you really want to commit early?
If you've considered this and then looked at the fields at these meeting and you initial reaction was MERCY! I can completely empathise.
If I'm backing I don't want any hint of track bias, deteriorating, ground, strong winds or other variables that conspire to corrupt the form.Bias however, is a money making opportunity if you trade on Betfair. As always the entry and exit points are crucial but last night at Moonee Valley was perfect example of how a biased track can be worked to your advantage

Rosehill is a fantastic programme and lets hope that standard is maintained through the Autumn.
Sandown has a very good card considering the carnival is over in Melbourne but it's ultra competitive.
Obviously there are possibilities but at this stage I am committed to nothing.
Updates and any bets sent via twitter throughout the afternoon

William Reid Stakes At Moonne Valley Tonight

Excellent night's racing in prospect at Moonee Valley this evening with the G1 William Reid Stakes the highlight.Moonee Valley post a Good 3 and despite rain all around the fringes of Melbourne it looks as if the city itself has missed the rain. There are still bits around but I doubt it will impact much on the track rating.expect fast conditions.
I'm under the weather health wise today so no in depth analysis and I've had no early bets.
Bets and updates via twitter throughout the evening.

Wednesday 19 March 2014

Cranbourne & Warwick Farm Today

Cranbourne is a Dead 4 and will almost certainly upgrade as a 30 degree day is forecast there.Warwick Farm is a Dead 4 and will probable upgrade if the thunderstorms stay away-monitor.
Cranbourne is a typically tricky Thursday provincial meeting but has possibilities if the markets are favourable.
Warwick Farm has a very solid midweek metro card again with possibilities depending on market developments.
Bets/updates via twitter throughout the afternoon.
Another winner at double figure odds yesterday and a couple that went like goats.
I know twitter is a far from ideal medium for getting stuff out but it's the best I can do at the moment.
Once this Betfair uncertainty resolves itself and I have some idea what parameters I'll be operating to I'll look at a better way.
I have a couple of options I've been considering but there is no point in starting until this situation is resolved or clarified

Tuesday 18 March 2014

Sandown Today & Newmarket at Newcastle

Sandown is a Good 3 and it's dry so expect fast condition.
Newmarket day at Newcastle.Good 3 but with thundery showers forecast.Apart from the main race the card there is uninspiring and the Newmarket looks a very tough this year..Small possibility I may play one at odds though but not committed at this stage.
No early bets either at Sandown but there are definite possibilities particularly as we get deeper into the day.
Press speculation about the future of Betfair in Australia reminds me that nothing lasts forever and that change is constant and inevitable. With change comes opportunity for some if not for all.
Once I know how this is panning out I'll have more to say but for now it's business as usual until I'm told otherwise.
Bets and updates via twitter throughout the afternoon

Weekly Round Up & The New Randwick

It's becoming harder to commit to early bets. The corporate bookmakers the majority of which are long established UK/Irish businesses run a very sophisticated "risk management" system where any early value in markets is quickly corrected. The risks associated with going in early are only worth it if the value is there. All the bets this week were sent close to post time via twitter.
Apart from Sydney metropolitan fixtures I am generally only concentrating on Victorian racing and I've noticed some changes in the way the markets are behaving. The UK corporates were always huge manipulators or the on course market over there and it looks like they are working the same trick here.Maybe they are just manipulating the Betfair markets here as the few on course bookies left at the non metro meetings are all glued to Betfair.Maybe times are just changing and I'm not as accurate at sussing out what's happening as I used to be.Bookmaker's have a lot to gain from keeping the horses at the head of the market as short as possible as generally that is where their biggest liability lies. The result of all this is that there appears to be some great "laying' opportunities if your prepared to take on the favourites close to the off.Obviously you need to be selective but there are plenty of shorties worth opposing that look well and truly overbet.
When I went away in January I was in Sydney for a few days and went out to have a look at the "New Randwick". I went with an open mind and was really hoping it would measure up.I have no race club memberships anymore so was in the public enclosure.
Maybe it is fabulous upstairs in the members and the corporate areas but for the everyday racegoer the place is a shadow of what it used to be and is totally lacking in atmosphere.
Loud music blares from speakers around the mounting yard and only stops after most of the horses have paraded a few times  and is replaced by the TVN feed.No chance of having a quiet look at the runners and finalising your stratergy.
Actually getting in to the place was hard work and the gents toilets were blocked and smelt worse than a Calcutta drain.
What a tragic waste of a golden opportunity to get racing back into the mainstream in Sydney.
I always loved Randwick and it was by far my favourite Australian racecourse but I left very disappointed that so much money had been spent and certainly at grass roots level the raceday experience is dull and drab compared to what it used to be.Very sad.

Six bets last week all sent via Twitter and a nice winner at good odds on Friday night at Moonee Valley.

Stakes      5.50
Returns   12.50
Profit        7.0 units

Year to date blog and tweet shows a profit of 15.06 units on a turnover of 21.30 units.
Been very quiet bets wise this year but the figures look good so far.
About a month away from the UK season getting serious in mid April so the volume of bets will soon steadily begin to climb.
Back Wedenesday

Guineas & Canterbury Stakes at Randwick & Bendigo

Randwick is a Dead 5 with possibility of light showers. If they stay away it is likely to upgrade I think.Bendigo is a Dead 4 but there is rain around and more expected possibly heavy thundery showers. The propect of a deteriorating track at Bendigo has me wary about going off early on anything there. It's also a very difficult card but there are possibilities.
Randwick is also a difficult card. It's a very good day's racing there but nothing appeals as a bet at current quotes.
There haven't been many bets so far this year but at least the ones put forward are bobbing up as winners regularly.A 16.0 winner sent via twitter last night was a very pleasant boost.
Possibilities today and bets and updates sent via Twitter

Moonee Valley Tonight

Moonee Valley is a Good 3 and a dry evening expected so fast conditions are likely.
It's a decent card with the G2 Alistair Clarke Stakes the highlight.
I'm struggling a bit for time today with the late nights staying up watching Cheltenham catching up with me today. I don't follow jumps racing well enough to bet on it so because I'm only watching it for the pleasure of watching it so I'll have a few drinks at the same time.I woke up absolutely rooted today so it's going on record tonight even though it's Gold Cup day.
There are possibilities this evening but I haven't committed to anything yet.Any bets or updates via Twitter is the best I can do this evening.

Tuesday 11 March 2014

Kyneton & Canterbury Today

Kyneton is a Dead 4 but is a possible upgrade.Canterbury is a Good 3 but with the possibility of thunderstorms through the afternoon.Monitor conditions.
Moderate stuff for a Wednesday at Kyneton but Canterbury is an OK card.No early bets today but there are possibilities so anything I'm backing will be sent via Twitter.

Sunday 9 March 2014

Adelaide Cup at Morphettvlile, Moonee Valley & Last weeks figures

Adelaide Cup day and a good race for the cup.I don't follow SA racing so my opinions on the supporting card are no use to you.Hard to split Big Memory and Cooldini in the cup but at around 3.30 each there is not a lot of fat there.Couldn't put you off either if you like them but they are currently both a bit too short in my opinion.
Moonee Valley is a Dead 4 but it's hot in Melbourne so I expect it upgrades.Chance of thundery showers this afternoon so monitor.
There are possibilities at MV this afternoon but I haven't backed anything yet.Updates via twitter throughout the afternoon.

Profitable week last week for the blog.Bets advised in two races in the blog for one winner and a profit of 3.75 units and bets advised in two races via Twitter for one winner and a profit of 2.60 units.
6.35 units profit for the week on a 6.0 unit outlay

Friday 7 March 2014

Newmarket,Australia Cup At Flemington and Chipping Norton At Warwick Farm

Flemington is a Good 3 and dry.Warwick Farm is a Slow 7 with possible showers.

Betting into two markets at flemington and a couple of possibilities at Warwick Farm and info there sent via twitter.

Flemington

Race 6
Happy to repeat the play that worked in the Oakleigh Plate.Four sound chances here in Lankan Rupee, samaready,Shamexpress and Knoydart.Lankan Rupee and Knoydart are the improving horses and I want to be with both here.Samaready is the obvious danger and the Price stable seem to prefer her to Lankan Rupee so betting may reflect that preference so no point in going in early on Lankan.Knoydart is big overs at 12.0 and I've taken that already.

Advised Bets;  Lankan Rupee 1.10 units at 4.70 or better-monitor on Betfair
Knoydart 0.65 units at 9.0 or better-take the 12.0 now

Race 7
Fiorente is a tough horse to beat but I have to be with the 3-y-o Shamus Award who reaffirmed his top class credentials winning the Guineas last week.Shamus will have first run on the Melbourne Cup winner and odds of 5.0 look very generous

Advised Bet; Shamus Award 1.65 units at 3.20 or better-take the 5.0 with Sportsbet/IAS

Possibilites at WF and Flemington updates via twitter throughout the afternoon

Tuesday 4 March 2014

Sandown & Canterbury Today

Sandown is a Good 3 and no sign of the predicted showers with radar currently clear.Canterbury is a slow 7 and there is some rain out west heading in so monitor.
Short for time so I'll have to be brief.
Canterbury any info sent via twitter

Sandown

Race 1
Marginally prefer Washinton Square to Senor Juez .I think these two dominate here but so does the market so there is no obvious value in either at this point.

Race 2
Watch and learn

Race 3
Deep maiden with a few live hopes.Difficult race

Race 4
Six  sound chances here plus a handful of half hopes.Very hard race to be confident about

Race 5
Livery starts his second Australian preperation. He looked a one paced grinder last time but it'll be no surprise if he's stronger and more able this time in.He may lead and run along here and outgrind the rest. Our Skeeta's recent wins have been good although it mixes it's form.trip is a query.Word Gets around is 2 from 3 this track and distance and expect him to be ready now.Huxxen has lost the winning habit but is closely matched with Our skeeta on recent form.Taiyoo is a hope if he gets the trip.Present Arms is a hope with blinkers on.Duplicity jones won really well last time but this is a tougher race with more depth so 2.80 looks very skinny.

Race 6
Written,Northern Cath and Conversation all got soft leads when winning their maidens. That won't happen today.Miralago is ready now and this trip is good for her.Berdini is a hope.Akagera probably wants one more run.Rezoned has a city race to win and is a hope here.couldn't entirely dismiss Dancing Rose either

Race 7
Very tough race

Race 8
Even tougher

Updates via Twitter through the afternoon

Weekly Round Up

Great racing at Flemington last Saturday but I went through the whole of Saturday without backing anything. On reflection I probably think Shamus Award is a missed winner but otherwise the whole week had me struggling to find bets I wanted to have.Only one bet advised all week in the blog and despite being 3.40 into 2.70 it ran poorly.Loss of 1.65 units last week for the blog
Plenty of lays last week for me and far too many of them won so personally I had a poor week. Not a flogging but enough to matter with around a 8 unit loss.
Mondays and Tuesdays are catch up time for me with replays and ratings and any other non racing related business.I'm not operating 6/7 days a week any more as the work load is simply too extreme.
Next blog on Wednesday
